Intro
A European furniture company had sourced the supplier, run the deal, and managed it all themselves. Before wiring the balance, they wanted someone on the ground to inspect the goods first. A sensible call, and it paid off.
Most of the suppliers were straightforward. The real story was one — the biggest order on the list — where the supplier’s confident “all good” and the actual state of the goods turned out to be two very different things.
Service scope
- Visit the supplier in China and check the goods according to the client’s instructions
- Check the goods for visible defects, scratches, and hardware issues
- Check colour, quantity, and model conformity against the specification sheet
- Take photos and videos of the process, details, and detected issues
Outcome
Eleven suppliers visited in all. The minor issues that came up were accepted and corrected on the spot. The exception was the biggest supplier, with the biggest invoice and the loudest claims of quality: theirs was the worst of the lot. Visible defects, scratched surfaces, hardware problems, items that needed rework — and a few bad enough that the client cancelled them outright.
I inspected the goods to the client’s instruction, recorded every issue with photos and video, and reported back. Not a polished “all good,” but the real condition of the goods, on record, before the balance was paid. Since then, the client has come back for the same check on their later orders.
